Crafting Collaborations for Preserving the Past

Plan to come and be inspired at the League of Local Historical Societies and Museums 57th Annual Meeting on Friday, October 29th. Hosted by the Vermont Historical Society, the event will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Bennington Museum, 75 Main Street in Bennington, Vermont. This year’s theme is “Crafting Collaborations.” From regional history fairs to mergers necessitated by the present challenging economic times, this past year has been a year filled with noteworthy and successful collaborative efforts by heritage organizations. Lisa Evans, the Vermont Historical Society’s League of Local Historical Societies Manager shares her enthusiasm, “These efforts have served to further the important cause of preserving and sharing Vermont history. We’re learning that by working together despite the challenges, our community can still produce important and effective programming.”

The keynote presentation will be given by two of the principal organizers of the statewide celebration of the crafts movement in Vermont, entitled “The State of Craft.” Martha Fitch, Vermont Crafts Council Executive Director, and Anne Majusiak, Guest Curator, will discuss the project’s planning and implementation and how it has incorporated the participation of artists, galleries, schools, organizations and businesses, museums and historical societies.

The daylong event will feature workshops and presentations that include artifact labeling, cataloging projects on the internet, working with a conservator, a historic Bennington walking tour, exterior paint colors for historic homes, publishing projects, working with PastPerfect software, and an Old Bennington Cemetery tour and cemetery care discussion. “You don’t have to be a member of a local historical society to gain insight from this educational and enlightening program,” noted Mark Hudson, executive director of the Vermont Historical Society.

Registration deadline is October 15. There is a nominal fee that includes lunch and refreshments: $35 for Vermont Historical Society members; $50 for non-members.
