"No Irish Need Apply: Attitudes Toward Irish Immigrants in
Nineteenth-Century Vermont"
On Monday, January 18th, the Vermont Historical Society will present a Martin Luther King Jr. Day program featuring author Vincent Feeney. Exploring Irish history in Vermont, Mr. Feeney will present his talk "No Irish Need Apply: Attitudes Toward Irish Immigrants in Nineteenth-Century Vermont." Many of these attitudes are examined in Feeney's new book, "Finnegans, Slaters and Stonepeggers: A History of the Irish in Vermont." There will be two presentations: noon at the Vermont History Center at 60 Washington Street in Barre and 7:00 pm at Vermont's History Museum at 109 State Street in Montpelier.
In discussing the event, Tess Taylor, director of education and public programming at the Historical Society, said, "We want to raise public consciousness about past discrimination in Vermont and learn from these negative attitudes in our history."
Refreshments in Barre will be provided by AmeriCorps Neighbor to Neighbor. The event is sponsored by Robin Lloyd and Rubin, Kidney, Myer and DeWolfe.
