Sponsor–a–Book

Many of the family history books in our library are disintegrating. Their leaves are brittle and cracked. Small pieces of pages dot the floor near the shelves. Full pages fall out as users search for information. Pencil and paper are the only way to copy information from these books because using the photocopy machine will only damage more pages.Unknown Vermont family portrait.Unknown Vermont family portrait.

Although there are many ways to replace disintegrated books, we are committed to keeping books on our shelves. We would like to purchase modern, photocopy reprints of these books so that they will still be available to researchers. We have identified 358 family genealogies that are on the shelves of the VHS library that are in need of replacement. Click below to look at our list, and then send us an e-mail telling us which book you would like to sponsor by purchasing a replacement copy. We will put a bookplate in each book you purchase so that future researchers will recognize your generosity. We will also, of course, send you a thank you note.

Genealogy is one of the strengths of the Vermont Historical Society library. The core of the collection are some 3800 books classified as family histories and shelved in “929.2” section of the library. These are books that are not available at most public libraries around the state; people come from far and wide to use them here.

Thank you for keeping the VHS a vital resource for family research.
