Presidents' Day Program - Hail to the Chief

February 22, 2012 at the Chittenden County Historical Society, Route 7 at the Shelburne Town Offices, 7:00 pm

Vermont Historical Society Executive Director Mark Hudson will share stories of Vermont’s encounters with the nation’s chief executives with the illustrated presentation “Hail to the Chief: The American President in Vermont. Hudson, says, “The nation’s top executive has always held intrigue, and we hope to open up discussion and reflection about them with this special presentation.”

Two presidents, Chester A. Arthur and Calvin Coolidge claim Vermont as their birthplace, while the parents of others, including Rutherford B. Hayes and William Howard Taft, were born in Vermont. Prior to their election as presidents, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison visited the newly admitted state, taking particular interest in the state’s sugar maples. In official capacities, on campaign, and on vacation, many others have visited the Green Mountain State. In each case, their visits were historic events.

This event is free and open to the public. Please contact Mark Hudson at (802) 479-8515.

Vermont History Expo 2012 - History's Country Fair!

Put it on your calendar now! June 16 & 17, 2012
At the Tunbridge World's Fairgrounds in Tunbridge, Vermont

Picture yourself walking down a path and turning to wave hello to President Calvin Coolidge and his wife, Grace. Pause for a moment, and you hear Ethan Allen giving a speech just up the road. As you walk on, you pass by a Civil War encampment, a play area where children are walking on stilts, and you smell waves of apple crisp and maple creemees in the air. In the field, you see a team of oxen plowing the sod. On the roadway, you watch in awe while the unicyclist pedals by. The only place this could all happen in one weekend is at the Vermont Historical Society's Vermont History Expo!
